Mulholland Brand Gate Stands Strong in Official Wildfire Safety Demonstration
In 2017, we transitioned to aluminum products for several reasons, including fire safety.
This year, that decision was put to the test.
The Demonstration
In May 2025, IBHS and CAL FIRE held a live fire demonstration to highlight how building materials affect a home’s ability to withstand wildfire. Two full-size structures were built. One used standard materials like wood siding, vinyl gutters, and bark mulch. The other featured fire-resistant alternatives, including rock mulch, fiber cement siding, and an aluminum gate from Mulholland Brand. Both were exposed to carefully controlled conditions, with embers and airflow designed to mimic how wildfires spread through neighborhoods.
The Results
As the fire progressed, the differences were clear. The structure made with flammable materials caught fire quickly and sustained heavy damage and eventually collapsed. The fire-resistant structure remained intact, even as flames moved through the test area.
This demonstration was a powerful reminder of how much material choices matter, especially in fire-prone areas like California.
